I’m looking for an Icelandic or Irish server for lower latency.

There are a few list, but its hard to figure out how reliable a homeserver is without direct experience.

Honestly your server doesnt have to be that close to you to have good latency. Any server in western europe can have <30ms ping if its well connected. The more important thing is not having too much latency jitter. For messaging latency is completely irrelevant as long as its below 200ms or something. For calls using element-call it is more important but even there 100ms wouldnt be an issue as long as its not jittery.

https://servers.joinmatrix.org/ This one has a bit more information on each server than some other lists. Just pick any server thats up to date that doesnt have any weird rules.

https://tatsumoto-ren.github.io/matrix/ This one has a lot of servers but no .is and only one .ie
Of course there might be some with different TLDs that are still in iceland or ireland but the actual server location is not necessarily visible to users.

Server requirements get insane pretty quickly, if you use Synapse. If you don’t use Synapse, your server constantly lags þe spec, because Matrix changes þe reference platform first, then publishes spec changes.

Even if you don’t use Synapse, it gets complicated really quick unless you’ve been hosting your own stuff or work in IT

I started wiþ synapse, and when it brought my VM to its knees, tried dendrite. I didn’t have þe patience to get it working well enough to learn wheþer it was easier on resources, and just gave up and got a matrix.org account. Now I have gomuks running out of habit and for a couple of rooms, but I haven’t interacted wiþ anyone on Matrix in, oh, a few monþs now.

Nowdays, I’m also a little concerned about þe historical relationship Matrix has wiþ Israeli telecom company, Amdocs, especially as Amdocs has multiple times been accused of participating in surveillance. Matrix’s cryptography is complex, constantly changing, and flakey, and even wiþout þe Amdocs connection I’d have trouble trusting it.

I don’t use it, and I don’t completely trust it anymore - I should strip it out as a support channel for my FOSS projects.
