China-aligned attackers broke into the networks of U.S. and Canadian universities to steal sensitive data and establish persistent access via webshells and backdoors, Proofpoint threat researchers said Tuesday.

The espionage-motivated attacks targeted physics and engineering departments, focusing on administrators and professors with national security links or organizations researching astrophysics and particle physics.

Proofpoint identified less than 10 university victims and estimates a few dozen universities may be impacted, Greg Lesnewich, principal threat researcher at Proofpoint, told CyberScoop. The company first observed the campaign in May and believes the campaign is ongoing.

“There is a high likelihood that many victims have not been made aware of this activity yet,” Lesnewich added.

A Chinese-speaking advanced persistent threat (APT) actor has been linked to a new custom backdoor called TinyRCT as part of cyber attacks aimed at government entities and critical infrastructure in Southeast Asia.

The activity, particularly aimed at state-owned enterprises in the energy and government sectors, has been attributed to a threat actor called CL-STA-1062, which Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 said shares overlaps with UAT-7237, a hacking group that was first flagged by Cisco Talos in August 2025 in relation to a campaign directed against web infrastructure entities in Taiwan.

In one campaign detected in September 2025, the threat actor is said to have infiltrated a Southeast Asian government entity and deployed a web shell to exfiltrate data from an MS SQL server. During the same attack, the threat actors have been found to conduct network reconnaissance on a separate government entity in the same country.

European Union officials have confirmed that China provided military training to hundreds of Russian soldiers who were subsequently deployed to participate in Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

German missile maker Diehl Defence is hoping to bring production of Ukraine’s Flamingo cruise missile to Germany as the continent races to acquire the ability to hit targets deep inside Russia.

Chief executive Helmut Rauch said that his company was planning talks in the coming weeks with Fire Point, one of Ukraine’s leading weapons manufacturers and the maker of a new FP-5 cruise missile that claims a range of more than 3,000km.
