  • I'm very much an Opportunity supporter; but this is great policy from Labour. It could go further; but credit where credit is due.

  • Yep.

Free public transit world probably triple that. So for under $200M we could have free public transit for all.

That alone would reduce pressure on road networks, eliminating the need for billions in spending....

  • I use windows at work, I have local admin which removed a lot of friction for a more technical user.

But the difference between my home machines (18 years Linux) and my work machine is friction. Windows makes things hard, it is always a few extra clicks or a stupid reg key change.

E.g. recently wanted my full right click menu back on win11, no nice setting option. Go edit this unnamed registry key, it seemed so janky in a modern os.

I'm a long time Mint user, jumped around a fair few distros but mint works well for me. It is so polished compared to windows, it seems crazy it is the free one.

  • I don't get why materials for HVDC are so much higher than everything else. Towers and cables are relatively cheap, the substation hardware is not, but neither are pumping stations with all of the safety requirements.

Also why only 500kV when there are 1.2MV systems in the world. Not that it would make much difference since the bulk of the cost is down to materials.

I didn't see the amortisation time in my quick skim through.

I know in NZ the compliance cost to get a pipeline through would kill any project that tried to do this.

Obviously leaks etc are ignored in this model, but they at a significant contributor to climate change.

  • The amendment is pretty stupid

13A Meaning of woman or female

In any legislation, regardless of gender identity,— (a) woman means an adult human biological female; and (b) female means a human biological female.

13B Meaning of man or male

In any legislation, regardless of gender identity,— (a) man means an adult human biological male; and (b) male means a human biological male.

All it does is shift the definition burden from woman to "biological female" and man to "biological male".

Obviously this is a not so subtle dog-whistle to bigots out there in NZ. Effectively this bill raises a non-issue and then doesn't even bother to solve it.

  • The fast track to corruption bill is having the intended effect.

  • It would depend; mostly on the intelligence of the 100 duck-sized horses. If they used pack tactics and attacked in unison; 100 duck-sized horses would quickly overcome me and take me down, if however they acted like individuals then they would be easy to beat.

A single horse sized duck would be difficult to defeat; the feathers would act as natural armor, it would be relatively slow compared to a normal horse, but ducks are aggressive which would tip the balance in favor of the giant duck. But with pack tactics 100 duck sized horses would still pose more of a problem.

  • "Going for growth" by reducing our training pipeline.... Great idea.

  • The ability to hold two contradicting truths in your mind is a sign of either advanced thinking or idiocy.

    To use your example.

The fact that the US are not the good guys and the fact that Iran are also not the good guys, are seemingly contradictory truths.

  • Cactus outdoor.

I had one for around 9 years. It got stolen, not sure how long they last, but there are ones in the wild that are over 30.

  • No I program with a magnetised needle and a steady hand.

  • 2001 first introduced to Fedora (1?) A friend installed on my laptop. Used it for a little; but it didn't do the things I wanted. A little while later I was back on XP.

I tried Ubuntu 6.04; it wasn't ready. Back to XP.I tried Ubuntu 8.04; it was really close. Back to XP.I tried Ubuntu 10.04; and have had Linux ever since. I have jumped to various distros over the years, I kept coming back to Mint though. I currently have a couple of computers running Bazzite and the rest on Mint.

I do keep Windows VM's around; XP, 7 and 10. But they barely get turned on these days.

I haven't had Windows installed on a machine in 16 years; even in 09 it only lasted a couple of months till I got time to replace it.

  • Long time Mint enjoyer, the ONLY caveat I would put on that is I doesn't yet have stable for support Wayland.

For a beginner, having the ability to run android apps via waydroid could be a real draw card.

Wayland support is coming, but it isn't here yet.

  • I don't mind waiting....the 9yo however does mind 🤷‍♂️

  • It worked for me.

I haven't needed it for around 20 years.... But it is really simple

  • I fixed this issue, but being an arsehole for a month.

Get a loud stereo with an alarm clock function; have it go off 1 minute after your alarm, and be really really loud.

Trust me, shocking yourself awake with a huge noise just after the little beep-beep works a treat. After a week or two, you will bolt out of bed to catch the stereo before it wakes everybody else up and pisses them off.
