Concepts/Prototypes/Futuristic etc.
We still have not a full diy handgun in 9mm. Thats the next big thing! With not-a-glock and some other projects we have 22lr but this is not the end. Just the start
More truly DIY designs that use non gun parts. This future-proofs against tyrannical legislation. As mentioned by an earlier poster, hybrid designs with a bit of metal work/reinforcing for longevity. I still think truly DIY designs in 9mm and 5.56mm are the holy grail, to go with 12g and 22lr. The most common, accessible calibres in other words.
More DIY builds!! Maybe try a DIY shotgun build…
Bullpups. All hail the bullpups
Were I in a jurisdiction that allowed it, I’d probably make a DIY blowback pistol in .380 ACP (including barrel and slide).
Belt fed shotguns, for reasons…
With a flexible belt feed tube so you can use a backpack as the mag/box.
more scratch built platforms , having 164 bodykits for AR internals sucks, the last good release was the rebel-9, hybrid professor p designs seem to work the best , mixing the realms of a little bit of metalwork for reliability, and printed parts for aesthetics/non essential load bearing parts. a stock/trigger/ firing pin system with some steel pipe and basic metal work would make a sick pump action 12GA
Short stroke gas pistons; I was really pumped for that G36 model in 5.56 that I saw days before r/fosscad was taken down. We’re all so used to using DI in our builds but there’s so many advantages and interesting changes to design to consider with ss piston, like reducing receiving fouling and improving reliability for the former vs reducing bolt tilt and ensuring a path for the piston in the latter.
Honestly more handguns especially revolvers. I know there’s a few revolvers in alpha/beta rn but thats the dream.
And anything sci-fi related really. I need a DL-44 blaster with changeable barrels damnit.
More (reliable, relatively inexpensive) hammer fired pistols Easy to produce video game platforms (Halo BR, Halo AR, Fallout 10mm, Aliens AR) Practical Rail guns
More .22 parts kits based on cheap handguns (Jennings J22, Rohm RG14/14s/23, Rohm R26, Heritage Rough Rider, some .22 derringers like the Davis Industries D-22, Lorcin L22, RG10, NAA mini [I know that one’s not cheap but I see some good parts kits for them])
revolvers, semi auto pistols (that don’t need an existing slide) bolt action rifles, shotguns (especially double barrel), survival takedown weapons ( especially multicaliber like the M6 Air Crew Survival Weapon), derrigers and More .22 parts kits based on cheap handguns as mentioned.
I close my eyes and picture a world where a squirted .410 pump-action exists
