Yeah I messaged back and forth with him a little and he really wants something unaffiliated with everything so that they don’t have any ToS to agree to or have changed on them. Maybe when they get settled somewhere we can have a post linking a few other parts of the general community outside of lemmy
That sounds like they don’t understand Lemmy more than anything. Hosting their own instance would solve that just like any other software, but with the added benefit of federation for a wider reach. Their own “reddit style” website that they set the TOS/rules/whatever on, and communicate with the rest of the Fediverse if so desired.
Oh well I guess. I wish them luck wherever they land.
I hope they warm up to lemmy, I tried to explain they would beasically be running their own website just with the perk of being linked to other communities. And I hope they do change their minds because fragmenting the community isn’t really good for anyone.
I would support having a few BST community set up, if we convinced a few of the other adjacent hobbies and groups to set up a communtiy with a bot pulling from reddit it would essentially create a back up community for everyone. Some big ones would be r/knife_swap and r/edcexchange
From what I’m hearing, they’re going to make their own website.
Something federated or a standalone thing?
Standalone
Bummer.

I think it’ll be a race to the bottom.
!bazaar@fosscad.io is pulling from r/gundeals now.
There is no reason folks cant set up a WTB/WTS community themselves on lemmy. The only thing missing is the audience/community
Not great to split a community, but website development takes time. And people want a GAFS replacement now… patience will only last so long.
My bet is they’ll come around to lemmy. Especially as a lot of GAFS people are probably also in FOSSCAD and vice versa.
