I mean with the stupid names, could you not?! carving out interest in this crowded space is a challenge onto itself, you don’t hafta shoot yourself in the foot from the get-go!
that aside, anyone got experience with the thing?
It’s a welsh word.
How do you pronounce it?
Kutch. Pronounce the U like in “put”. The comment above that includes its definition has a link to the pronunciation of it if you’d prefer to hear it.
IPA is here: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cwtch
Nty, I don’t like IPAs
thank you! I am also one of the dozens of people who can read, what are the odds we come across one another on lemmy of all places, huh?
while I have you here, would you say that giving unpronounceable welsh names to new entrants attempting to challenge established players with a decade+ strong foothold in this space is a) a prudent decision or b) hella stupid?
we got issues switching normies to signal which has been around forever, how’s tongue-breaker gonna make any progress?
unpronounceable
To whom? Should Welsh people not use privacy software too? Stupid ass chauvinist position
In any case, the IPA above doesn’t seem “unpronounceable” at all to me as a native speaker of German and fluent speaker of English. The pronunciation isn’t intuitive from the spelling, that is quite a different thing from being unpronounceable.
I mean, just imagine you’re spitting game at cutie at the bar and things are cooking and you go “hit me up on hkmbljurgh” and all of a sudden fire and brimstone all around
kthulucthulhu appears wondering why you summonedhimthem you scream sorry bro wrong number bro kthulu goes its aight buthethey missed a dentist’s appointment because of this the barkeep is now pissed who’s gonna clean this up cutie is nowhere to be found…shoulda gone with signal is what I’m saying
Again, stupid chauvinist take. Not everyone speaks English and not everyone uses English pronunciations. Also, cwtch is a relatively popular loanword too, plenty of English speakers have learnt to say it.
You know most of the world finds English spellings hard to pronounce, right? You’re speaking in a language notorious for its inconsistent pronunciations (see “-ough”).
It’s also particularly fucked up to mock Welsh like that given that Welsh is one of the many languages with a long history of children being violently reprimanded for speaking their native language by English people.
To piggyback on this and apply chauvinistic reciprocity, why would you spit anything at some you find cute. They probably decided to leave with Cthulhu, who is confidently, unapologetically, Cthulhu.
I’ve never heard of it, but damn it does sound interesting.
The fact that your identity is nothing but a Tor V3 onion address is incredibly interesting.
Those are super easy to change, so no one would know that it’s you across different addresses unless you specifically tell them.
I see they have an Android app, but I would want to make sure that it’s on fdroid.
At first glance, I’m able to find repositories with what looks like source code in it, so this might actually be something interesting to look into.

Or they recognize your writing (granted, unless you admit to it or do things like tell the same story on both accounts, it is basically just a hunch rather than solid evidence). I’ve accidentally done that with someone across websites once based on primarily based on how they wrote (granted it was a very niche community, making that cross-website different-username identification based on solely writing style much more feasible). If you write generically and avoid things like unusual emoticons (or intentionally write differently with different handles), its a lot harder to do that.
Oh look, they also accept Monero as donations.
Tried it years ago, it was clunky as hell. Maybe it has improved.
It’s a great project. Unfortunately Android consistently shuts it down while it is running in the background.
They don’t have some sort of foreground service in the notification tray that keeps it running in the background?
The number of FOSS apps not taking advantage of UnifiedPush is too damn high.
Agreed. unifiedPush should be tablesteaks
Thanks for the hint :) probably going to switch from SimpleX to this one :)

This feels way too overkill for me.
Depends on your threat model. But given more people using these things normalize it for those who can justify the need for such software (like whistleblowers, those organizing illegal direct action), it makes it easier for them to use it without it gaining too much suspicion and makes it easier for them to use it more consistently even outside talking about things that more obviously need that extra security.
If it sounds like overkill on the privacy front, that’s a good chance that it means you should be using it LOL.
Yeah. When it comes to privacy, overkill often turns out to be not quite enough.
